Adjusting the steering wheel position mechanically

Only adjust the steering wheel before driving or while the vehicle is stationary ⇒ 
. A correctly adjusted steering wheel helps the driver maintain control, reach the controls comfortably, and keep the airbag protection zone properly aligned.
1. Tilt the lever fig. 63 downward.
2. Adjust the steering wheel so that it can be firmly held at the outer edge with both hands at the nine o'clock and three o'clock position fig. 64.
3. Press the lever all the way up until it locks flush with the steering column trim panel ⇒

After adjustment, gently try to move the steering wheel up, down, forward, and backward to confirm it is locked. In the Volkswagen Taos, the steering wheel should be positioned so the driver can steer naturally without stretching the arms or sitting too close to the airbag.
WARNING
Incorrect use of the steering wheel adjuster and an incorrect steering wheel adjustment could cause serious or fatal injuries.
- Always push the lever fig. 63 (1) upward into its locked position after adjusting so that you do not change the steering wheel position unintentionally while driving.
- Never adjust the steering wheel while driving. If you find the steering wheel must be adjusted while driving, stop the vehicle safely and adjust the steering wheel correctly.
- The steering wheel must always face toward the chest and never toward the face. Otherwise, the protective function of the driver's front airbag may be limited in the event of an accident.
- To reduce the risk of injuries if the driver's front airbag deploys, always hold the outer edge of the steering wheel firmly with both hands in the nine o'clock and three o'clock position fig. 64.
- Never hold the steering wheel in the twelve o'clock position or in any other way, such as holding the center of the steering wheel. Otherwise, the arms, hands, and head could be seriously injured if the driver's front airbag deploys.
Good steering wheel position works together with the seat, head restraint, pedals, mirrors, and safety belt. Before driving, adjust the seat first, then set the steering wheel so the instrument cluster is visible and the driver’s chest remains at a safe distance from the wheel hub.
